The Peer Advisory Committee was developed in accordance with the Harm Reduction Ontario Trillium Grant handed to the York Region Centre for Community Safety and the Aid’s Committee of York Region in January 2017. The Committee is formed by individuals who have survived domestic violence and have accessed community resources through the York Region Centre for Community Safety. Committee meetings are held bi-monthly, lasting two hours each. The committee also meets in small working groups monthly with meetings lasting two hours as well. The committee has many roles including; planning of a support group for women who have experienced domestic violence, feedback on services including trauma informed practices, advocacy around domestic violence, and outreach. The committees mission statement is as follows: The York Region Centre for Community Safety Peer Advisory Committee will be an inclusive, collaborative, advocacy network to serve survivors of violence or at risk individuals to facilitate empowerment, self-care and affirm the talents and skills of participants. The committee works together in order to achieve its vision to build safer communities for individuals affected by violence and those at risk of violence. The committee hopes to raise awareness for individuals who have experienced violence in the community.
